Would a .tar.gz of the patched source code work? I don't have Debian.

I edited the configure script so it will use ncursesw instead of ncurses.
(Assuming you have libncursesw.so where the system can find it. I don't,
so I couldn't actually test the configure script.) It should work if you
just do
./configure; make
