Ubuntu's select other instances of the same program screen appears.

Yes.

Yes, but the screen appears even if I'm running only one instance of
gnome-terminal.

I have no idea what could be a mnemonic and, at the same time,
ergonomic combo for this. The shortcut M-: seems good enough for me.
Maybe we should look at what other editors use.
