BTW Have you tried latest CVS ? If not, could you try it ?

Could you compile nss-mysql in debug mode and sends me a
excerpt of your auth log when you use nscd ?

iirc, nscd is threaded, it should only open 3 connections or
so. I thought it took a long time before running out of
threads.

If you run a very small site that will work, but if you run
a large site you'll run out of mysql threads _very_ quickly.
 Let's say one of your users does a 'find' on / or you are
doing many name-instensive operations it will hammer mysql
and then you are hosed ... :-)

Of course turning off nscd stinks but it works.
