Follow-up Comment #3, bug #30478 (project octave):

I agree that there is a problem, but I'm not sure that it can be localized to
the Octave code base.  As one of the original reporter's noted, when they
compiled from source the executable was fine.  From a developer perspective,
that is as much as I take responsibility for -- I wrote code and it compiles
cleanly and executes.  

If a user then re-arranges the internals of the code by pre-linking and it
ceases to work, I don't feel terribly responsible for that.

It may help to look through a more detailed backtrace, but this kind of thing
can be very difficult to debug since it could depend on a whole lot of
libraries and the specific ways in which they were compiled.
