Follow-up Comment #1, bug #31093 (project octave):
I think the cause of this problem is that things like
image ([0, 1], [0.49, 62.5], 1:64)
are not working correctly now with the fltk backend. Using the gnuplot
backend, this generates a rainbow image (with the spectrum determined by the
current colormap). With the fltk backend, the image is apparently not
displayed.
