Follow-up Comment #3, bug #31696 (project octave):
I think there are two practical approaches.
A) Modify Octave to treat 4.3 the same as 4.2.x
B) Update your gnuplot
Taking approach A will have the unfortunate effect of Octave not supporting
...
(1) Specifying the wxt figure size.
(2) No transparent patches
(3) No transparent surfaces
(4) Inability to determine which terminals are supported (no TikZ/Lua/etc
support)
(5) Inability to set the font size for legends
As it is unlikely that a non-developer type will have 4.3 installed, I'm
inclined to favor B. However, I also don't like the idea of a user being stuck
with a non-functional Octave if he is not able to update gnuplot.
Are you able to update gnuplot? ... or might you be at the mercy of an
administrator?
