Follow-up Comment #22, bug #33018 (project octave):

FWIW

I tried copying the libtool generated by R to the Octave directory.  It runs
into the same malformed attempt to create a shared library as the one that
Octave creates.

I had a failure compiling libgnu/mktime.c that I hadn't noticed before.  I
encountered the same failure building Gnu tar 1.26, but had no problems w/
1.25, so I copied that version to Octave so that make could continue on to the
library creation.
