Follow-up Comment #5, bug #33291 (project octave):

There is good news/bad news here.  The good news is that this doesn't seem to
be specifically an Octave issue, but rather a gnuplot issue.  The bad news is
that you still have a problem.  I would try getting gnuplot to work in a
standalone manner.  Once you can do that, then there may be a chance of
figuring out how to get Octave to call gnuplot in the correct manner.  See,
for example, the help text for gnuplot_binary().

I'm attaching a simple data file, tst.dat, to the bug report.  I can produce
something in gnuplot with these lines.
