Follow-up Comment #40:

I see similarly bad results going from 3.4.0 to 3.4.1

I did a little digging and found that the call to __go_patch__ in
plot/private/__contour__.m is now much slower than it was in 3.4.0.

I don't see anything obvious (there were no changes to __go_patch__ itself, as
far as I can tell) so probably the best way to find the cause would be to
bisect between the current sources and the 3.4.0 release point in the
mercurial archive.
