Okay, fair enough, I'll take Bjarne's word for it.

Kinda annoying, though. This is a limitation of MSFT's C++ stdlib library,
btw. I had people friends this on mingw, and it works as expected there. It's
only MSFT's C++ stdlib that fails this way.

I don't believe people running the mingw32 build of Octave who said it was
also failing there. ;-) Or perhaps the mingw32 build is somehow using the same
MSFT C++ stdlib.

So, it looks like you're right, but we need to patch more than just the one
location you patched. I'll work on it later today hopefully with a patch ready
by tomorrow, unless you beat me to it.
