Follow-up Comment #8, bug #37623 (project octave): I had the same problems with Octave and Windows 8. I was able to keep Octave from closing on syntax error by adding -i to the shortcut to force interactive mode. E.g. the shortcut points to "C:OctaveOctave3.6.2_gcc4.6.2binoctave.exe -i".
