Details:

With octave 3.6.4 on ubuntu 12.04 I ran the following attached test file and I
got:

octave:1> test
error: invalid character '�' (ASCII 255) near line 4, column 1
parse error near line 4 of file
/net/gaia/home/levente/source/octave/dataCleaning/test.m


where test.m contained the following 3 lines:
"dt  = [[ 1;2; 0];


"
