Follow-up Comment #1:
The attachment doesn't look like a complete config.log, it was interrupted.
Can you attach one that completed when you got a successful configure where
you were able to run make?
Can you also try configuring Octave the following way instead, this is the
technique I use and it works for me regularly:
./configure --prefix=/home//dev/octave-3.6.4/install
CPPFLAGS="-I/home//dev/hdf5-1.8.10/install/include"
LDFLAGS="-L/home//dev/hdf5-1.8.10/install/lib"
If this works and the --with-hdf5 options didn't, then there may indeed be a
minor bug in one of the make files.
