Follow-up Comment #2, bug #39359 (project octave):

Stefan,

I found a trivial solution to the shrinking axes.  A diff is attached.

This fixes the print problem but the legend box and line spacing no longer
adjust to a change in fontsize (or change in string, which was already a bug).
 If this fixes all other problems you've seen, I'll push it and work on fixing
the legend box.
