Follow-up Comment #2:

All examples work for me on Windows XP using octave-cli.exe.  That is, running
__run_test_suite__, running "test dec2base", and executing directly in the
interpreter 


assert (dec2base (uint64 (2)^63-1, 16), "7FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF")


On the other hand, I do get an error when running "test dec2base" under the
GUI.  Maybe someone else can confirm that this is a GUI only problem, but that
still leaves a very strange situation.
