Octave only accesses the Internet if you ask it to (using the urlread or ftp
functions, or the homework submission script written for the machine learning
class).
Can you describe what Octave is doing when it crashes? Is it idle or is it
running a calculation? Do you know the specific function that was called when
it crashed if it was running a script?
I'm no Octave-on-Windows expert, but it also helps to say which build of
Octave you installed, MinGW or MSVC. Also which Octave Forge packages you are
using and which version of the BLAS libraries you are using if you had a
choice when you installed, Netlib (reference) BLAS, ATLAS, or OpenBLAS.
