Details:

I am using Mac OS Mavericks and installed Java for Mac OS with the binary
installer from sourceforge.net.
Unfortunately something seems to be wrong with core java package. When trying
to use java I receive the following error:

octave:1> debug_java
error: debug_java: Octave was not compiled with Java interface

Using io package I get the following:

octave:2> xlsread ("abc.xls")
Detected XLS interfaces: warning:  No Java support found (no Java JRE? no Java
pkg installed AND loaded?)

None.
warning: xlsopen.m: no support for spreadsheet I/O
