Follow-up Comment #10, bug #41116 (project octave):

Oh sure, I agree that LL*UU=x with your modification. And indeed that may be
the best we can do. I think your path is probably what should be done for

But MATLAB ensures that UU is upper triangular when nargout<=3---it expects
column permutation to be completely disabled. That behavior cannot be
reproduced with UMFPACK.

So there will still remain MATLAB incompatibility unless we bring in a
different sparse LU factorization.
