Follow-up Comment #5, bug #42838 (project octave):

Use the -debug option:


print -debug test.pdf


This will create a file in your current directory called
octave-print-commands.log, which is the input file to gnuplot. I just verified
that I can do this, pass this file to gnuplot 4.6.5 and it works fine, while
it fails with gnuplot 5.0rc1.

Note that the command file will direct gnuplot to create a eps file in the
/tmp directory, Octave uses other tools to convert eps to pdf.
