Update of bug #44007 (project octave):
Status: In Progress => Ready For Test

Follow-up Comment #2:
The attached changeset fixes the "original" bug (= not returning to the
original working directory) and makes tar.m run on Windows.
It introduces a new private function __w2mpth__.m as I suppose it'll be needed
elsewhere as well.
As to the failing xtest, that suffers from more or less the same issue, I'll
post in the maintainers ML.
Again, I'd like core devs to have a look at the fix.
