Follow-up Comment #2, bug #45488 (project octave):

Could you read the description of -dpdflatexstandalone in the Manual?
This describes how to use LaTeX with fltk. This is what
I used for figure 15.7 which is the only figure in the
Manual that was using interpreter tex mode. The result
is actually better.

You can see how it works by lookinf at the patch or trying
it.

The patch would, as you say, improve the documentation,
but the main intent is to remove the dependence on gnuplot.
