Follow-up Comment #3, bug #45600 (project octave):

Many thanks H.G. for the extensive investigation. Unfortunately, I am unable
to draw conclusions either.
Now don't forget that it doesn't seem to be a linux vs Windows issue : I
obtain an on-screen font size on linux that is comparable to what you obtain
on Windows. 

Any chance that you are using a startup script that forces non default font
size on Ubuntu? I use "octave -f" to be sure not to (sorry if once again that
is what you do also :-)
