Indeed, why have several functions for one and the same goal. Maybe one of the
two should be deprecated (I'd favor make_absolute_filename to stay).
But IIRC there is a subtle difference between make_absolute_filename and
canonicalize_file_name on Windows (apart from fileseps) that hit me some years
ago in the io package.
BTW, none of the two is supported in Matlab (r2015b prerelese) => +1 for
Octave there :-)
There's a GetFullPath on Matlab's File Exchange to fill the gap
