1) Based on my experiments, the problem is unrelated with the creation of
qt-settings (see Comment #5).

2) The problem appears both with the CLI and with the GUI. The delay that I
observe is the same in both cases (approx. 40s) and it is also the same with
qt/fltk/gnuplot.
