Follow-up Comment #7:

I have pushed http://hg.code.sf.net/p/octave/image/rev/b9120f602e44 which adds
support for images of class integer. It uses the approach suggested by
Hartmut. It still needs some performance improvements but I already have some
ideas how to do it. Testing would be welcome.

This will be part of the next minor release, 2.6.0 or later.
