Follow-up Comment #14, bug #45458 (project octave):
This fontconfig bug report may be relevant:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64766
It is suggested in the bug log that perhaps fontconfig is not well suited for
non-GNU/Linux systems (no idea of the authority or veracity of that claim).
