Follow-up Comment #78, bug #44187 (project octave):

I'm near the end of what I think is sensible to include.

I've prepared a patch that removes the color/mono syntax from the gnuplot
toolkit specific m-files, and temporarily modifies the color of all objects
instead. Since, I'm worried that this solution may run into problems due to
the listeners, I'll mull over this a bit longer.

The same problem will exist for the OpenGL toolkits, so for practical purposes
doing the same for gnuplot won't introduce any new bugs. But  not doing it may
introduce bugs that wouldn't exist otherwise.
