Follow-up Comment #11, bug #49169 (project octave):

I also tried making a `foo` from within some unrelated class (`baz`).  This
also doesn't work:

>> y = baz()
Error using class
The name 'foo' is not a valid class name.

Error in baz (line 4)
  x = builtin ('class', x, 'foo', bar);

This language is restricting my freedom to make dumb choices ;-) j/k!

Maybe it would work if the @foo class were nested inside the address@hidden 
I didn't try that!
