Follow-up Comment #19, bug #45458 (project octave):
Bug #49300 reports the same delay on the first plot on MacOS 10.12 (Sierra).
On Stackoverflow there are reports that this can take up to 3min. I think the
solution here would be really a popup window with a progressbar to inform the
user.
