Follow-up Comment #12, bug #49510 (project octave):

Just to clarify, test.xlsx was created by opening test.xls in Excel, then
saving it as test.xlsx.  The illegal XML characters were created by Excel
based on spreadsheet cells that contained text which included those
characters.
