Follow-up Comment #2:
Confirmed with 4.2.0. To make sure there was no interaction with Qt, or with
user settings in a .octaverc file, I ran
octave-4.2.0 -f --no-gui-libs
octave:3> attempting to save variables to 'octave-workspace'...
save to 'octave-workspace' complete
error: unexpected exception while parsing input
