Follow-up Comment #7, bug #49936 (project octave):

There 'should' be no difference between the installer vs the zipfile
The installer just copies the files to a directory, and creates shortcuts,
registry settings for installed files.
How did you run octave when using the zip file ?
The installer does create a qt.conf file in the octave\bin directory, which
the zip file dooes not have - you could also try removing it and seeing if it
makes any difference.
