Follow-up Comment #7, bug #50359 (project octave):

The whole reason this special type was added to Octave was to handle the
(crazy?) difference between


x(idx) = [];


and


t = [];
x(idx) = t;


This seems reasonably clear to me from the example in the docstring for
isnull.
