Follow-up Comment #33:

I checked in the following changeset so that we are no longer adding -lws2_32
to the LIBS variable in the configure script and instead rely entirely on
gnulib to provide dirent.h and the related directory handling functions.

I haven't checked yet to see whether this avoids the problem with gethostname
or uname on Windows systems, but I think it should.
