Follow-up Comment #2, bug #52250 (project octave): Indeed using appmenu-qt5 makes me recover the icons but then I loose the main menu bar (the editor menu bar is still there) and the main menu shortcuts like "ctrl+Q" don't work anymore. Looks line the appmenu QPA was designed for desktops like ubuntu or mac with a native main menu bar. I found this post [1] than describes very well the issue. In short for versions prior to Qt 5.5 (I have 5.2) it doesn't look like something Octave can do about.
