Follow-up Comment #25:

This was annoyingly tedious.  I adapted the example code here to be a proper
BIST test for regressions, but then __run_test_suite__ failed because it was
based on passing out-of-band information through global variables.  I modified
__run_test_suite__ to use nested functions and sharing of variables with the
parent function to get rid of the globals.  It now works and was checked in
here (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/068556c5167e)
