The second change involves the evaluator but it is not really important or
significant change as far as performance goes.
With these changes, things are better for Rik's example but not back to where
we were with 4.2.1. However, beginning just before I started refactoring the
interpreter, I started periodically timing "make check" on my build system and
now my timings are about the same as before, and that is with a number of new
tests that were not present back then. There is still some room for
improvement, but things don't look nearly so bad as they did before my most
recent changes.
