Follow-up Comment #23:

@jwe: Yes, the new patch fixes the resizing behavior of the columns.  This is
turning in to one of *those* bug reports with a thousand different threads.  I
am going to hive off the segfault, the performance issue with large arrays,
and the display/editing of strings (i.e., character row vectors) in to
separate bug reports.

This bug report can return to its original issue of displaying scalars
directly rather than '[1x1 double]' when a cell array is present.
