Details:

According to documentation, Matlab only displays 7 digits after the decimal
point when showing class single values.  This is useful because it reinforces
to the user that digits beyond the 7th are not meaningful.

In Octave, a long format always displays 15 digits after the decimal point.

Octave:


octave:1> format long
octave:2> single (pi)
ans =  3.14159274101257
