At first sight, in lieu of my comment #6, I think your patch should be
acceptable.
Yet there must have been a reason I've put the version check in, but that is
long ago so I need to dig it up and see if it is still required.
Somewhere this Easter weekend I think I can do that.

Maybe a try-catch around the version method can help as well - that did work
with other Java methods that had changed and threw NPEs. We'll see.
Oh and I need to install Java 9, I'm still on 8
