Follow-up Comment #4:
FWIW, I find that an undocked VE variable window is visible most of the time.
The exception is when I undock one of the other main widgets like the
Documentation tab or the Command Window tab. When those are undocked, and
have focus, then the VE window disappears. The window reappears when I select
the main Octave window.
This is with KDE and QT5.6.1. I suspect somehow the window role setting is
not being applied correctly. Or maybe we don't change the window Type field
when it moves from being a docked widget to an undocked widget? I think it
needs to be something like "Normal Window" or maybe "Utility Window".
