Details:
The following code should produce a figure with a blue axes background
surrounded by a magenta figure background.
close all
graphics_toolkit gnuplot
plot (1:10, 'o-r')
set (gca, "color", "b")
set (gcf, "color", "m", "inverthardcopy", false)
print tst.pdf
The code doesn't work with gnuplot (attached tst.gnuplot.pdf), but does work
with FLTK (attached tst.fltk.pdf).
