Follow-up Comment #19, bug #54216 (project octave):

I started to look at generating all the .texi files and immediately found that
automake fails when it can't find the octave.texi file.  So it needs to be
generated by the bootstrap script.  I guess this problem could be solved but
it seems complicated.

Maybe it would be easier and more reliable to extend the .hgignore syntax to
be able to allow us to say "ignore this pattern except for these files"...

Or just explicitly list all the generated .texi files.

Or, hey, generate the .hgignore file using a script that can have any kind of
logic that you need to use!  :-)
