Follow-up Comment #4, bug #54308 (project octave):

Are the dependency files solely for the purpose of speeding up compilation
(i.e., the compiler doesn't have to look through all the files and resolve
dependencies with each new build)?  If the "./configure" were to automatically
discard all the .dep/xyz.Plo files, would it only mean that the first build
after a configure takes slightly longer?

BTW, it seems lately that debug-building has sped up a bit.  (By
"debug-building" I mean make a little change and recompile...i.e., that first
bit in the make process doesn't take so long anymore.)
