Philip - yes, this is related.

Primarily, you are suffering the same bug as I am, regardless of having one or
two different JVMs installed. The string "linked in or loaded libraries" means
that the logic is falling through incorrectly when JAVA_HOME isn't set. That
should be easy to fix.

As to using bin/client or bin/server, at the moment I believe that if
bin/client is found, it should prefer that to bin/server, as the current code
does it.

If you are running a 64-bit Octave and setting JAVA_HOME to C:\Program
Files\java\jre<version>, then that ought to fail because you set the wrong

Do you have any examples of a single JAVA_HOME (not two different Java
installations) where both bin/client and bin/server are present, and
bin/client shouldn't be preferred?
