Follow-up Comment #14, bug #48273 (project octave):

I just tried a simple experiment:
first: clf
Then increase the vertical size the the figure to about
twice what it was (most of available vertical space)

After that change n=12 works correctly. And, the plots
just about fill the available space. So, it appears
that what goes wrong starts when the plots fill the
size of the plot window.
