Follow-up Comment #18, bug #55273 (project octave):

I built using a local copy of gnulib's master branch and HAVE_MKFIFO is now
again defined in config.h.

I think we should do a gnulib update on the stable branch to fix this bug, but
I'm having troubles with the gnulib mirror, so it may take a little doing.

If you want to test locally on macOS, you can use git to clone the gnulib
repository anywhere on your system, and run Octave's bootstrap with the
--gnulib-srcdir option. On my system, this looks like

$ cd ~/src
$ git clone https://git.savannah.gnu.org/git/gnulib.git
$ cd ~/src/octave/stable
$ ./bootstrap --gnulib-srcdir=../../gnulib
