Follow-up Comment #1, bug #55928 (project octave):
The documentation for ncwriteatt says:
Global attributes can be defined by using "/" or the group name as varname.
The type of value is mapped to the NetCDF data types
so (havent tried it)
ncwriteatt(ncfile, "/", "Conventions", "CF-1.6")
