Details:

important when editing a line initiated by up arrowing through command
history.

also maintain position in up/down arrowing through history even after clearing
w/esc.

also allow continuing to use up/down arrow through history even after editing
one or more of the items (match matlab command window behavior), maintaining
the edits only until this line is executed.
