Follow-up Comment #22, bug #56151 (project octave):

jwe: agreed -- since non-negligible subpopulations of octave users have
differing expectations in this case, i don't think it matters much what the
default behavior is.  what does matter is that there is a discoverable and
easy way for users to understand what is happening when their expectations are
violated and how to get their expected behavior (and learn about the
advantages of alternatives).
